Flying without Fear - The best selling book

This review is from: Flying Without Fear (Paperback) I have flown many years of my life with no problem. After a bit of a turbulent flight, and my mum and sister admitting they don’t like flying, I developed a full blown phobia of flying. I drag myself onto planes because I love my holidays, but the panic starts two/three weeks before and is debilitating. Not to mention the valium I knock back with vodka…….not the best, or most effective, long-term solution to my problem!! I’ll be soon flying with my nephew, and really don’t want to transfer this fear to him, so I trawled websites and found this book. I ordered it, and read it cover to cover in an hour. I immediately felt the tightness around my chest ease after reading it, I can’t tell you the relief it gave me. It’s mainly questions and answers from fearful flyers, and Captain Keith (a pilot for FIFTY years) answering your worries. It explains exactly how a plane flies, how it was designed to fly, and how it’s impossible through it’s design for an aircraft to drop out of the sky – my main fear!! It also explains ‘turbulence’ and why it’s NOT dangerous, only uncomfortable!! It’s humorous, written in a way that makes you smile, and contains information on the noises you hear, why you feel like the engines are stopping just after take-off, and why stewardesses stop serving coffee when it’s bumpy – purely so they don’t spill hot coffee on you!!! Here’s some quotes that will be getting me through my flight: “What is normal and safe, to me as an experienced airline captain is probably not what you would call normal, and you should try to bear this in mind when you are flying. And just because it’s not normal to you, doesn’t mean it’s dangerous” “Turbulence is the irregular movement of air. It’s certainly uncomfortable, but it’s not dangerous. An aircraft can easily withstand it, and a pilot cannot lose control of an aircraft because of it.” I’m flying tomorrow, and while i’m still a bit apprehensive, this book has helped me to realise that aircraft are DESIGNED to be in the air, and actually, it is the SAFEST form of transport around. I’ll be taking this book with me to read on the plane, and although I think i’ll still be a bit nervous, I feel like i’ve taken a huge step in overcoming my fear of flying. I would recommend this book to nervous flyers and people who like talking facts about flying! Hope this review helps too! :o)

Flying without Fear - The best selling book

This review is from: Flying Without Fear (Paperback) Similarly to the other reviewers, I had a strange apprehension about flying that seemed to occur mysteriously after several totally fine flights. Coming from a family with a history of anxious travel (one relative refusing to fly and only going by boat if she had a hammer wrapped in Clingfilm so she could bludgeon her way out of a sinking hull) (the Clingfilm was because she also had a fear of germs!) I always tried to reassure people, until it started happening to me. I’d be riding each bump in the sky with every muscle tense, and even had to do several flights with my eyes closed for the duration. Crazy. This book really helped. My anxious brain kept leaping to questions I couldn’t answer 100%, like.. “what if the plane gets hit by lightning??” Leading to grave situations in my brain as we descended down to London during a thunderstorm. He goes through a lot of myths – I’ve realised a lot of people rely wholly on myths and nonsense about flying. Here you get the simple truth- despite the spin freakonomics has put on it, flying is safe. He explains fully everything you could have a question about, and so simply I was able to commentate on what was happening during the last landing of a flight I was recently on. Due to the shear turbulence, and the wind, the landing was slightly coggly, and applause (more common on transatlantic flights where whooping and cheering is encouraged!) broke out. Then it hit me- these people mistook the conditions to mean that the landing was either more treacherous, or difficult to perform- according to this book, no it isn’t. I was able to see that because the pilot cannot explain to the nervous passenger what was really going on- and how normal it was, the nervous flyer is left with whatever reason his or her feverous imagination suggests, which was undoubtedly leading to fear in my case. For the record, turbulence cannot damage a plane and is perfectly normal. Thanks for your help Keith; I’m not now wasting my precious relaxation time in the air by worrying about stupid nonsense or my own mortality, which is a gift indeed. Millions of people fly each day, so why be scared? Couple this book with your own self-control – discipline your thoughts not to go off on a mega fear fantasy, and you should be OK. If I could do it, and I’m a massive coward, this book should be enough to take the edge off. It should also work well in conjunction with whatever other therapies you have planned to help get rid of a life detracting ailment- the “fear of flying”.

This review is from: Flying Without Fear (Paperback) I developed a fear of flying a few years ago as an adult despite having flown happily many many times before that. I was subsequently prescribed pills to help me calm down whilst flying but all these do is slightly mask the panic. The cure came from this book – after reading it many times I’m now 99% cured of my fear and I actually look forward to flying; I’ve subsequently been on lots of long and short haul flights without any problems. I used to pack it in my hand luggage for reading on the plane if I felt uncomfortable but I don’t even need to do that now, I can honestly say the explanations given in the book really will help you feel better about flying. Highly recommended and many thanks to Captain Godfrey!

This review is from: Flying Without Fear (Paperback) This book can change lives. Like many other reviewers, I was terrified of flying even though I had to travel around the world in my work. Every time I boarded a plane, it was a nightmare before I read this book. The book works – pure and simple. If you have a fear of flying, buy it and you will be cured. End of story. A very good book for nervous, phobic flyers. It helps massively to allay many of the exaggerated fears associated with flying. I refused to fly for a decade through fear and the fear of having a panic attack while on a plane.I even stopped a plane from taking off once LOL !!! I beat this fear with a mixture of hypnosis and Knowledge. This book will give you the knowledge about flying. You can beat this irrational fear and this book will help. Good luck and happy flying
