Welcome to help about Panic Attacks
“I have suffered from panic attacks ever since I had children, which is over seven years now. As a result I don’t travel by air at all. But I want to find a way to get over the problem and lead a normal life, which means visiting Europe to see many of my relatives that I haven’t seen in all that time. I am alright in cars and trains but I avoid boats and planes at all costs. I have been prescribed medicine by my doctor but want to be ‘pill free’ if I go flying in case something happens on board, I don’t want to be drugged up and useless. What can I do?”

Strangely enough actual panic attacks are very rare on aircraft. People often report that they are having an attack before they actually have them. But of course the onset can be just as upsetting as the real thing.
Cabin Crew are trained in all sorts of medical procedures and dealing with PA’s is not unknown to them. The first thing to do is to accept that you can’t have an attack if you control your breathing. However bad things seem, if you regulate your breathing you will not have an attack. Elsewhere on this site you will find an explanation of Diaphragmatic breathing techniques, and if you use this in conjunction with relaxation exercises and visualisations you will control your attack.
