A Go Around

Remember despite what you think Flying a Go Around is a routine procedure to pilots.

Fear of flying

The runway is clearly in view so the pilot can go ahead and land

Years ago when I used to fly around Scotland, where we’d do six flights in a day it wouldn’t be unusual to four Go Arounds in a day. In the early 70’s we used to call it “overshooting”.

One pilot, usually the co-pilot would fly the plane and the Captain would be looking out for the runway and approach lights. If they weren’t visible he’d, (there were no women pilots then) expect the co-pilot to open the throttles and climb away. And that’s all there was to it.

And that’s all there still is to it…except that today the automatic pilot is more likely to be flying the plane under the supervision of the pilots.

Going Around requires the pilots to increase the power to ‘Go Around’ thrust. Raise the nose to the climbing attitude…about 25 degrees above level raise the flaps and  wheels  and follow the prescribed routing back to a holding procedure. It’s not a big deal…it’s a routine procedure
